My Grumpy Football Player Boss – Epilogue

Epilogue

Cali

With Hil sleeping in my arms like she was always meant to, I considered where we would go from here. With the deal Remy made, Hil and I no longer needed to go on the run. We could be together. Our lives could be whatever we wanted it to be.

Waking up the next morning, I was grateful for the painkillers. Unfortunately, it hadn’t a clean shot. The bullet had nicked my bone as it tore through my thigh.

I was going to need a lot of rehab if I was going to play football again. Luckily, football season was still months off. I would have the end of the semester and all summer to recover.

Staying in bed for the next few days, I made sure to catch everyone up back home on what had happened. Although I still couldn’t drive, I assured them I was coming back. Meanwhile, my professors forwarded me my schoolwork and my brothers continued to hold down the fort at home.

The first day I was able to get out of bed, Hil introduced me to the other important man in her life. It was hard to say whether or not her father liked me. He seemed to just tolerate me until Remy told him what I had done. After that, the dying man was certainly grateful even though he made clear that no one would be good enough for his daughter.

Watching the two of them, I wondered what having a father would be like. Hil’s dad was definitely full of flaws. But it was clear that he loved Hil. He accepted Hil for who she was.

Would my father have done the same? I was thinking I would never know.

“I need to tell you guys something,” Claude said the next time the three of us were on FaceTime.

“What’s up?” Titus asked from our dorm room.

“I just got my mother to talk. My whole life she has avoided the subject, but this time when I brought him up, she spoke.”

I froze, suddenly awash in panic. Was Claude saying what I thought he was? Did he find out who our father was?

“What did she say?” I asked hesitantly.

“She gave me a name,” he said stunned.

“What is it?” I asked, starting to tremble in fear.

“I wrote it down. I want to get it right,” he said, looking at a piece of paper.

When he said the name, the blood rushed from my face. I recognized it.

“Does that mean anything to either of you?” Claude asked, staring back at us through his phone.

Titus thought for a moment and then said that it didn’t. They both then looked at me.

“No. It doesn’t mean anything to me either,” I lied, hoping that neither would realize it.

“Well, I typed it into the Internet. Nothing came up.”

I didn’t say it, but I knew there was a reason why it hadn’t.

“Listen, I have to go. Hil needs me for something. I should be heading home in a few days, though. We can talk about it then,” I told them, trying to get off of the call as quickly as I could.

Alone in Hil’s room, I dropped the phone and pressed my palms against my face. Claude had to have heard it wrong. Or maybe it was my memory that was off. Either way, something wasn’t right. That person couldn’t be my father. I refused to believe it. I refused to even think about it. So instead, I turned my attention to everything else I had going on.

Staying only a few more days, I drove home as soon as I was able. Hil needed to stay and spend whatever remaining time she had with her father. I needed to get back to Snowy Falls in preparation for my mother’s surgery.

She had set a date, and with the money Hil gave me, everything was good to go. With Dr. Tom reassuring us that she would eventually make a full recovery, we both felt that Mama was in good hands.

But that left me with only one thing to think about. There was no way that man was our father. I was going to wait and see what else Claude found out before saying more. But if he was the man I was thinking he was, God help me. God help us all.

Thinking about rereading this book? Consider reading it as a male/male romance in, ‘Grumpy Boss Trouble’, a steamy wolf shifter romance in ‘The Curvy Wolf’s Alpha’, or a wholesome romance in ‘I Don’t Date My Grumpy Boss.’
